Aquatic Volunteers must be a minimum of 14 years of age, have Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid Certification to work in Aquatics.

The Loft, Aurora's Youth Lounge at the AFLC, is looking for volunteers.

Do you like hanging out at The Loft? Do you want to earn community service hours and gain leadership experience? Sign-up to become a Loft Ambassador and help us make sure the lounge is a fun place for teens to hang out.

Loft Ambassadors will attend a 1.5-hour training session and volunteer support staff and participants. Interested candidates are invited to click the link below to complete an application (parent/guardian signatures may be required). Applicants will be notified if they are successful or not prior to the start of each month. Please note that space is limited.

Program Details

• This program is open to teens between the ages of 12 to 17 years.
• Participants must attend a mandatory training session prior to beginning their volunteer placement.
• Training sessions take place once a month on Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
• Space is limited and it may not be possible to volunteer multiple times. Participation is based on program availability.
• Community Service Hours will be awarded for placement hours. Letters of Community Service are available upon request.

Loft Ambassador Application

The Youth Engagement Committee (Y.E.C.) is a group of youth aged 12 to 17 years who serve to guide and advise Youth Staff on appropriate programs, special events, and services for youth in the Town of Aurora. Learn more about our Y.E.C. group.

Age: 13 to 14 years
Participants must be the minimum age by December 31 of the year they are participating in the program.

A two-week program that introduces teens to leadership development through our summer camps. During the first week of the program, participants will be in-class with instructors for volunteer training. Topics will include basic information on program planning, effective behaviour management for children, games, songs, policies and procedures. For the second week, participants will be placed in one of our camp programs as volunteers. Camp staff will work with L.I.T.s throughout the week, introducing them to the camp environment, mentoring them in camp situations, providing feedback and evaluations, and encouraging them to play a vital role in the camp program. L.I.T.s will be expected to act as role models to campers, being respectful and responsible.

Note: There is a cost associated with this program.

Age: 14 to 15 years
Participants must be the minimum age by December 31 of the year they are participating in the program.

The next step in your leadership training. Participants will attend a mandatory one-day training, covering a range of camp related topics, including leadership, customer service skills, behaviour management, teamwork and risk management. Participants will then be placed in a camp setting, assisting camp groups and supporting the staff team. Within these placements participants will be mentored by camp staff and provided with an evaluation at the end of the session. Participants will be expected to act as role models to campers, being respectful and responsible. C.I.T.s will be required to submit either a completed Self Declaration Form for Minors Working with Vulnerable Individuals (17 Years & Under) or a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (18 Years & Older).

Note: There is a mandatory training session that must be attended in order to volunteer at camp. Training sessions must take place before in-camp placement week(s). Volunteers are required to pre-register for their in-camp placement weeks to secure a spot. Pre-registration does not guarantee a camp location, only a placement in the program. Participants can register for a maximum of 2 weeks in camp volunteering.

• All volunteers will be required to follow all COVID-19 Summer Camp Guidelines from York Region Public Health and the Province of Ontario.
• All volunteers will be required to participate in camp swims and water play occurring at their placement. If participating in camp swims, volunteers will complete a swim test overseen by Town of Aurora lifeguards.
• Camp placement and locations will be confirmed on the Thursday before each in-camp session via email by 6 p.m.
• For the C.I.T. program, even if participants have attended a training in a previous year, they are still required to attend a training each year before volunteering in camp.
• C.I.T. volunteers are responsible for registering for their volunteer weeks via e-PLAY. Registering for a training session does not guarantee a volunteer placement.
• Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from program locations.
• Volunteers must bring a nut free lunch and snacks, refillable water bottle and sunscreen daily.
• All volunteers will be provided with a Letter of Community Service at the end of the summer that confirms their total volunteer hours and general duties.

Record of Community Service Hours

Volunteers are responsible for making sure they get their Community Service Hours forms signed by staff either during their placement or after their placement has ended. Personal information (e.g. name, school, email, and dates of volunteer programs) must be completed before forms are given to Town staff to sign off on hours. During camp, volunteers can choose one of the following options:

1. Hand volunteer forms into camp staff at their placement location. Forms will be signed by onsite staff and returned by the end of the week.
2. Drop volunteer forms off at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex (135 Industrial Parkway North, Aurora, ON, L4G 4C4, Attention Youth Division). Volunteers will be emailed once the form has been completed. Please allow up to one week for processing.

After camp has ended in the summer, community service forms will not completed on the spot. Volunteers must drop off forms at the address above or email them to the Youth Division

Required Forms for C.I.T.s

Volunteers are required to complete a Volunteer Information Form & Waiver and a Self Declaration Form for Individuals Working with Vulnerable Persons prior to attending training. During completion of the Volunteer Information Form & Waiver, volunteers will also be asked if they want to complete an optional Photo Waiver. Parent/Guardian signatures will be required for participants under the age of 18 years. Copies of the forms will be provided to volunteers via email prior to their in-person training.
