The Loft is designed to be a safe and supervised drop-in space for youth 12 to 17 years old.
While open youth can come to The Loft to use any of the equipment on site or simply spend time in the space.
How do I get into The Loft? Is there a fee or do I have to check in?
The Loft is at the end of the second floor of the Aurora Family Leisure Complex. You can enter through the main double doors. There is no fee.
The space has a variety of equipment and amenities like:
You can come alone or with friends, hang out and meet new friends over a game of ping pong or work on your homework. During the year we have Movie Nights and other special events. Check the bulletin board near the entrance for events and opportunities.
I'm 11 but I'll be 12 soon, can I come to The Loft?
While we're excited that users of all ages are interested in The Loft, the space was safely designed and created to engage those 12 to 17 years old.
We encourage parents/guardians or general visitors to stop by, take a quick tour of the new facility. We'd be happy to show you around and talk about the available programs and services.
What if I want to go check out the Skate Park or Gym will I be able to get back in?
You're free to come and go from The Loft as you please. You only need to sign in once but can exit/enter as many times as you like while it's open.
Please note, staff are inside The Loft only for supervision and not throughout the remainder of the facility.
While open, we have youth staff in the Loft but supervision is limited to the immediate youth room. Staff is available to supervise for appropriate language, respond to first aid situations and facilitate the use of the space and equipment. On Friday nights, there's additional youth staff onsite who spend time in various areas of the building. Due to the nature of the programs and services being offered, please note supervision is limited to the availability of staff and the immediate needs of the programming at that time.
Participants will only be supervised during scheduled Town recreation programs and services and does not extend outside of the building, Lambert Willson Park or the Skate Park. We have a positive, ongoing relationship with the York Regional Police (YRP). In efforts to keep all participants and facility users safe, YRP will have a consistent presence at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex on Friday nights in these unsupervised spaces (for example - parking lot, Lambert Willson Park and Skate Park).
Parents/guardians of Loft users should note parks typically are unsupervised spaces and our jurisdiction as staff will be limited to the Aurora Family Leisure Complex facility. While staff is not responsible for supervision of participants outside the facility, YRP will be contacted if there's reason to believe any users in the park or surrounding facility area are participating in any illegal behaviour or are in need of assistance.
Who are the youth staff who supervise The Loft and what do they do?
The youth staff are a group of Program Leaders, recognizable by their Town uniform and name badge. They've worked in our programs for years and often have an interest in working with youth in a variety of fields including recreation, education, psychology, and social work.
They are there to engage with Loft users, ensure the guidelines are being followed, and promote positive youth development.
We are not responsible for any lost or stolen belongings of individual participants and/or visitors to The Loft or the Aurora Family Leisure Complex. As the space is open and accessible, it's recommended participants and/or visitors do not leave personal belongings unattended. Items left at The Loft after it closes for the day will be dropped off at the facility Lost & Found beside the Customer Service Desk on the first floor.
Can I bring my bike/skateboard/scooter/roller blades into The Loft?
Yes you can and there's even a bike/scooter stand inside the space for you to park your equipment. There's also several bike stands on the west side of the building at the front of the facility.
For everyone's safety, please don't ride any of those items inside the Aurora Family Leisure Complex. All Skate Park users or the general public must dismount their bike/skateboard/scooter/roller blades prior to entering the facility.
The Loft is meant to be a safe and fun space for all youth to enjoy. We encourage everyone to read and follow the list of guidelines below:
The following is a list of unacceptable behaviours or actions that if displayed, may cause a participant and/or visitor to be asked to leave The Loft and/or the facility:
Any participant and/or visitor violating these guidelines, constituting a public nuisance, or otherwise misusing the facility, can and will be asked to leave by any of our staff. If the person does not leave, staff will call Emergency Services to have the individual removed. These persons may be banned from future use of the facility, either temporarily or permanently, depending on the nature of the incident.
If there are concerns, members of the public are asked to speak with our Youth Staff to assist. For more information, please call Julie Stephenson, Youth and Community Development Coordinator at 905-726-4760 or email the Youth Division
