Unique space to grieve deceased loved ones unveiled in Aurora

An unconnected phone booth known as a wind phone will be unveiled at Sheppard’s Bush on Friday, December 13. This installation, a partnership between the Town of Aurora and Oasis Bereavement, provides a unique, peaceful space where individuals can engage in one-way conversations with deceased loved ones. Wind phones became popular in Japan in the early 2010s as way for people to mourn deceased victims of the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.

Wind phones have grown in popularity worldwide over the last several years as a tool for healing, allowing those grieving to express their emotions in a private, reflective environment.

Aurora’s wind phone is the third installation in York Region by Oasis Bereavement, with others in Newmarket and Richmond Hill. The goal is to introduce more wind phones in natural, peaceful locations across the region in spring 2025.
