Aurora Launches the John Abel Community Garden

The Town of Aurora is excited to introduce a new community garden program at John Abel Park, offering residents and community groups the chance to grow their own food and contribute to addressing food insecurity.

The John Abel Community Garden will feature a variety of planter box-style plots available for annual allocation. These plots will allow individuals and groups to cultivate food for personal use. The garden will operate seasonally, from May 1 to November 1 each year.

“As a Town, we are committed to fostering a sense of community and sustainability,” said Mayor Tom Mrakas. “The John Abel Community Garden is a wonderful opportunity for residents to come together, share knowledge, and grow food in a supportive, collaborative space.”

Applications for garden plots must be submitted by Friday, March 7, 2025. An annual nonrefundable fee to rent a plot in the garden will be required. Selected applicants will be chosen through a random lottery process and will be responsible for maintaining their plots throughout the season.
