Aurora Launches new AMPS system to enhance the parking penalty process for residents and visitors
The Town of Aurora has launched an Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) that will provide residents with a customer-focused dispute resolution process to allow parking offence matters to be heard by the Town, instead of through the current process of the Provincial Offences Act (POA) and the regional court system.
“The implementation of the AMPS system will simplify the process of resolving infraction notices, provide staff with increased discretion to resolve penalty notices and provide an improved customer experience,” said Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas. “This will also reduce costs and expedite the process, without having to go through the court system.”
Under the new AMPS system, officers will issue a Penalty Notice to a vehicle that is in violation of Aurora’s parking by-laws. The notice will present two options: pay the ticket or request a meeting with a Screening Officer to dispute the Penalty Notice.
Options to pay the fine or schedule a meeting will be available on the Town’s website at aurora.ca/AMPS . Screening review meetings will take place on a predetermined schedule and will be conducted virtually. If the defendant does not agree with the outcome from the meeting with the Screening Office, they can appeal the decision and request it be reviewed by a Hearing Officer. All decisions from the Hearing Officer are final and binding.
