Aurora Cultural Precinct

Aurora Town Council approved a four-stage planning approach to move forward the Cultural Precinct/Aurora Town Square project. This plan also supports the promenade study, approved in 2010, with a focus on developing the Town's downtown core along Yonge Street and Wellington Street.

A Cultural Precinct Plan aligns with the Strategic Plan goal of supporting an exceptional quality of life for all. By celebrating and promoting our culture, we move another step forward in becoming a modern, progressive community with a strong, unified vision.

The Aurora Cultural Precinct is a three-block area bounded by: Mosley Street, Metcalfe/Church Street and Yonge Street. This area has the highest concentration of built heritage and cultural landscapes in Aurora's downtown core. The area highlights a mix of public and private properties with existing heritage, architecture, neighbourhood character, park space and community facilities.

The Cultural Precinct Plan builds on existing policy and implementation work from previous consultants. The Town hired FOTEEN Consulting, Bray Heritage and Sierra Planning to engage the public and devise a place to revitalize the downtown core. AECOM was also hired to conduct a repurposing study and make recommendations on Town-owned structures.

A number of steps in the process have already occurred: a municipal staff working group, culture walk and an online survey to engage residents and foster positive change.

The Town has an opportunity to create a new cultural hub that will serve as a focal point for residents and tourists.

This revitalization will attract and boost tourism, enhance the quality of life for residents and expand cultural resources in the community. This will also bring new opportunities for partnerships, businesses and attract new residents from diverse backgrounds to Aurora.
